Wht is the difference Linux Mint vs Ubuntu Flavor

Just a curious question.
The current Ubuntu Flavors distros are based on Ubuntu, with their own custom apps and DE.
But so is Linux Mint right? It's based on Ubuntu. So why is not an "Ubuntu Flavor" ??

Hello!

Linux Mint is a derivative of Ubuntu, or based on Ubuntu. It has no official standing with Canonical, Ltd, which is the distributor of Ubuntu and owns the right to "*buntu" as a trademark.

Canonical recognizes the "flavors" as officially part of the Ubuntu family because they go through a rather rigorous process to be recognized as a flavor. They are more than just based on Ubuntu.
