Not enough free space on boot for update

I'm on 16.04. Whenever I try to update recently I get:

"The upgrade needs a total of 95.8 M free space on disk '/boot'. Please free at least an additional 29.7 M of disk space on '/boot'. Empty your trash and remove temporary packages of former installations using 'sudo apt-get clean'."

I used to fix it with


dpkg -l 'linux-*' | sed '/^ii/!d;/'"$(uname -r | sed "s/\(.*\)-\([^0-9]\+\)/\1/")"'/d;s/^[^ ]* [^ ]* \([^ ]*\).*/\1/;/[0-9]/!d' && sudo apt-get autoremove

but this is no longer working, or rather it is not longer sufficient.

I only have 246mb on '/boot' which strikes me as not a lot.

Can anyone help? Suggestions?

Maybe that long command should do the trick. The expressions are to complicated to verify quickly. But simply
sudo apt autoremoveshould do it. Try it.

But that command (actually a variant of it) was already at the end of your big oneliner. Let's see what old packages you have installed:

We can clean up and gain just a bit more space. The packages marked 'rc' where the 'rc' is (R)emoved but (C)onfig files remain .
While there is no built in way to remove all of your configuration information from your removed packages you can remove all configuration data from every removed package with the following command.


dpkg -l | awk '/^rc/{print $2}' | xargs sudo dpkg -P

Now what shows :


df -h
dpkg -l | grep linux-

Looks as if autoremove should run . else --- well I guess we manually intervene .
Short of a risky re-sizing of partitions I have no ready solution . Get the installed kernels down to the minimum 2 and keep it there when a new kernel is installed , is in my opinion, the better option .

the run the updater to get the newest kernel -66.

The original command you posted seems like all it did was print a bunch of kernels and then ran a completely different command with the autoremove, inconsequential to the listed kernels.

Looks good.
You can add additional pipe(s) to exclude more kernels, but my thinking was that since the purpose of this thread was to clean out enough space to run the updater, you're gonna get the newer kernel anyway, which would provide a secondary kernel to boot, in this case the current kernel.
If that makes sense.

Not sure why, but simply add another pipe like grep -v -e -4.4.0-63

dpkg -l linux-* | awk '/^ii/{ print $2}' | grep -v -e `uname -r | cut -f1,2 -d"-"` | grep -e [0-9] | grep -E "(image|headers)" | grep -v -e -4.4.0-63 | xargs sudo apt-get --dry-run remove
you should now see that the -63 version is excluded from the removal list.

As to "I certainly wouldn't mind more space" : the only way to do that is resize the partitions - risky risky, but can be done . That however only prolongs the need for house keeping . One can help on the house keeping by invoking 'autoremove' automatically .

What now is the current situation ?

I'm having the same problem with Ubuntu-Mate 16.04 on a Raspberry pi3. Update asks for 48.2 M. It doesn't look like there are any old kernels to delete. Is there a simple way to increase the size of /boot? I've been using Ubuntu 14.04 on my main computer for a few years, but I'm by no means knowledgeable about linux commands.

The linux community wants people to give linux a try. Hassles like this are certainly likely to make a Windows user say "Nope, too buggy/difficult." I should also point out that I was lucky to notice the update notice on the bottom of the screen when my computer suddenly froze up. The 'auto-update' feature might as well be called 'mysterious auto-crash' to anyone who didn't notice. I've now turned updates to 'manual'.

Okay, I found more info on the ubuntu-mate community forum. The Raspberry Pi has a non-standard boot format which causes a problem with updating. I'll wait for the Raspberry Pi software engineers to fix the problem.
