I have posted the following question on askubuntu.com (http://askubuntu.com/questions/889158/screen-goes-black-for-a-second-regularly), with zero comments after 5 days:

I have just installed xubuntu 16.10 on a new laptop.
The screen goes black from time to time. Blackout is irregular (could not find a pattern), and lasts 2-3 seconds.
Not only is this a pain while working on it, it also renders the laptop unusable for presentations when a projector has to be connected.

I have checked the display settings and disabled display power management.
The problem occurs on the connected external display - not on the laptop itself (mirrored displays).

Did anybody else experienced this problem (and found a solution)?

System details below.

I would suggest using Ubuntu 16.04 LTS it is a Long term support and might work better. The 16.10 release will only have support until July 2017 something to think about

16.04 will have a few more years of support which I think is a better deal

I will consider installing 16.04 from scratch. If the problem goes away in 16.04 then 16.10 would be a regression.
