Hi,

I am new to Ubuntu and I am looking for ways to earn money remotely.
I've read that Canonical hires remote employees in a substantial percentage and also that anyone can contribute to Ubuntu as is mentioned on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ContributeToUbuntu

This concept has struck me because it gives you the opportunity to prove yourself to the company and also get to know what exactly you will be working on. Hence, I am looking to learn & earn by contributing to Ubuntu.

So I want to know if Canonical pays salary to people with Official Ubuntu membership?
In other words, do people with this membership count as Canonical employees. Is this one of the ways you can land yourself at Canonical remotely?

Not a technical support request. Thread moved to The Cafe.

In a word: no.

Off course you get paid in the adoration of millions worldwide that can make use of the software you helped create. And you even get the opportunity to get angry e-mails/Tweets/forum posts/bug reports/*insert form of online communication here* about something wrong/perceived wrong or broken in your software :p

My salary started at $0 and has doubled annually ever since.

Now, to be fair, that has been offset by my UF Staff salary, which started at zero and has dropped by half every year since.

There are jobs that you can apply for through Canonical and being an official Ubuntu Member can help you along the way. You can use your Ubuntu contributions at ubuntu-forums as a resume hallmark to reference your interest in why you want to work for Canonical. If you can authenticate your participation in <solved> threads and that you contributed significant research, then it is a marker in your favor if you apply for a Canonical job. So the scenario would be that you would be assigned tickets (customers) and it would be your job as a resolution tech to help specific users solve problems. Thats just one example. Ah.. uh...yes.. ubuntu-forums is a proving ground so to speak but not in an official sense. If you become a member at ubuntu-forums and sign the code of conduct, you are basically a defacto ubuntu member which is owned by Canonical but your current contributions at ubuntuforums are a free contribution to the ubuntu community which Canonical holds all the rights to.

regards..
