View Full Version : [ubuntu] mainline kernel upgrade

I usually stick to LTS Ubuntu, but for a new laptop running 16.04, I was forced to install a mainline kernel, 4.9.0 to get hardware support.
This kernel will not show up in a distro for awhile, but there are fixes, etc, that I would like to take advantage of and maybe even
get the last couple of items working. I understand that this is not updated and I now must install manually.
I don't want to break more than I fix and I understand that there are a few different approaches.
I didn't really want to go this way but most everything is working great.

Now the question is what is generally the best strategy going forward? I'm hoping to keep it as is and that August point release has 4.9
or can I use an HWE kernel when it gets 4.9?

Sorry if there is a thread somewhere discussing this.
