I have Ubuntu 16.04 (.1 --> .2) installed, 32 bit version on an old Pentium PC.
Worked great (slow, but usable) ...

I decided to update the install using "sudo apt-get update, upgrade, dist-upgrade".
It did that just fine, but when I went to reboot, I had the dreaded grub-rescue prompt. I could no longer boot.

So, when this happened last time, I just loaded the live-CD, clicked the "try ubuntu" to load Ubuntu and then installed boot-repair and repaired grub.

But this time - after I load the Ubuntu CD and get the wecome/ try, install screen. When I click try ubuntu, the screen goes black. And stays that way.

What's going on? How can I get past this...

thanks

Hello and welcome, Have you tried the ""nomodeset"" option

This will help you if you get stuck

No, I haven't because my system won't let me. It just goes black screen with no response.
I tried pressing the spacebar when I have the purple screen up during initial load, but nothing.
