how install Skype, download - execute but nothing, why?

For the next couple of weeks you can install it by enabling the canonical partner repos in software-sources, but it looks as if skype will lose its Linux uses, or at least no new packages will be created after March 31st (I think that is the date) this year.

They are pushing everyone on to "Skype for Linux Alpha"

which is better than nothing, but will not have any video calling just yet, though they say it will come later.

I have yet to try this new version, and will be very sorry not to be able to see my sister, who lives on the opposite side of the world to me, when I call her on skype, so I will probably keep the current version going for now, and until it no longer works safely. My guess is that it will styop working pretty soon after the cut off date, but we'll see.
