I have ubuntu 16.04 LTS . I would like to have multiple desktops(I think this is the right term) on the same screen so I can switch between 2 fullscreen apps. I have seen it work in other linux distros, but I don't know if I can or how to do it with ubuntu.

So I want to be able to like hit a hotkey and switch between two different desktop interfaces. I don't mean like Using untiy on one and XFCE on another. Just two instances of the default ubuntu desktop.

I hope I made this clear enough. Thank you for any help.

Thread moved to Desktop Environments.
Please tell us what desktop you are using now.

Enable Workspaces in System Settings >> Appearance >> Behavior.
This, by default gives you 4 workspaces.
To toggle between them you can use ctrl + alt + arrow keys.
To move windows around from workspace to workspace press shift+ ctrl + alt + arrow keys.

To get an overhead view, when you enable the workspaces it'll add an icon(a clear window pane looking icon) to the launcher, use that to get an overhead view of the workspaces.

Hope it helps
