i had read up upon the resurgence of cassettes on the US market in 2016
and thought dyou know what I still have some left from the 80s and 90s
I wonder if ...

So I fished out this one

Spent the princely sum of £10 acquired this >>>

Ran it through Audacity and this is what i obtained

Then ran files through Audiochecker 2.0

So they rip to flac and have the same quality as cds it seems

I am sure that depends on the condition of the cassette at the time of recording, I have recorded from new cassettes and it sounded great.

oh yes not the whirring chewed old ones but good condition cassettes; interestingly some of the ones i have digitized are 30 years old and not affected by time it seems and they keep a great sound once on the computer

Unlike digital storage formats - analogue tape/vinyl was never constrained by artificial "bitrates" ... although to claim tape was truly lossless would not be strictly true either... a well recorded, sympathetically stored 80's audio compact cassette is more than capable of ripping to more than acceptable FLAC quality ;) I've still got a number of "Original Digital Remasters" on (analog) tape in the attic lol

The cassettes I recorded with audacity I turned into cd's that had real good quality.

so what would be the point of buying analog sound and then moving it into digital form?

back in the days i could clearly hear the difference between CD and cassete. it was demonstrated to me by two different unrelated people. and CD was superior. now wheather they now work crappy CD's is another matter. i haven't bought a CD in a while.

With a quality tape and recording on a very good machine, the quality was there or at least could be there assuming the person doing the recording knew what they were doing and the equipment used was in proper working order. Keep in mind that your $100 cassette recorder was not a quality piece of equipment. Good maybe, but not quality. And then you had the signal-to-noise ratio to consider. If recording using analog mixer, more noise. If you $100 cassette machine came with mics, they were NOT quality mics.

Manufacturers loved to spout the specs on the machines. Like, 20-20K frequency response. That was good, but what no one understood was the part right after that that said + or - 30db. That pretty much meant that the lower or higher ends of that 20-20K were going to be barely heard if heard at all.

Also, you had wow and flutter to consider. The tape just simply did not move at an extremely constant rate.

I did a lot of live recording with good equipment: $400 recorder and $100 apiece mics. Paid $12-20 for one blank tape. (This was 45 years ago!)

While I got (for the time) very good quality recordings, I would never go back to tape. Your frequency response today is limited pretty much by your sound card alone (as far as the recording machine is concerned). Wow and flutter don't exist in digital format.

I still do live recording through a digital mixer hooked up to my PC via a USB cable. Mics still about $150 apiece. The PC is nothing special at all: 2.8 dual core with 4 gig RAM running Xubuntu and recording up to 18 channels at once. The quality that I get now blows away anything I ever got on tape.

i do not have any technical audio expertize to be able to really judge the difference. to me it was just noticable.

however there is no doubt in my mind that loading a specture game from cassete was way more unpredictable than loading the tape it from HD. not exactly sure how that tech worked, but obviously there was a higher chance of error when loading from cassette than with HD or digital media. 5 min to load and then there was error. time from my youth i will never get back... :)
