Hi all,

Ubuntu 16.04 64bit

I can't find ubuntu 16.04 ISO with KDE desktop, only with GNOME desktop.

I found following article:-
How to Install KDE Plasma 5.7 on Ubuntu 16.04 and Ubuntu 16.10
https://www.linuxbabe.com/ubuntu/install-kde-plasma-5-7-ubuntu-16-04-ubuntu-16-10

Please advise whether the steps mentioned will change GNOME desktop to KDE desktop? OR it will be a dual desktop KDE/GNOME

Thanks in advance

Regards

Yes it will install KDE if you follow the directions in that link, but there is not an ISO of that you have to run those commands in the terminal.

Hi,

Thanks for your advice.

If I understand it correctly I must install ubuntu 16.04 desktop first?

If you are using Gnome then you are probably running Ununtu with the Gnome Desk Top, you just need to run the commands in that link, unless you are like using Fedora with the Gnome Desk Top instead of Ubuntu.

You do not have Ubuntu with unity and the gnome desktop installed where you can switch between them?

I have both Ubuntu16.04 and Ubuntu14.04 OSs running on VMs of Oracle VirtualBox here,

I haven't run KDE desktop and Fedora for prolonged time. Because I found some problem in configuring Kdenlive on GOME desktop. I'm trying to install Kdenlive on KDE desktop to see what will happen.

Hi,

I'm not very clear whether the ISOs of Ubuntu 16.04 and Ubuntu 14.04 come with unity desktop or gnome desktop as default?

Ubuntu comes with the Unity desktop and no other, although KDE can be installed alongside Unity, which will give you mixed menus/applications ect but you can boot into either or.

Kubuntu (http://kubuntu.org/) is what you want if you want a purer KDE desktop, or even KDE Neon (https://neon.kde.org/).

Hi,

Thanks for your advice.

I need Ubuntu with KDE desktop to test Kdenlive, not multi-desktop

I found;
Download Kubuntu
http://www.kubuntu.org/getkubuntu/

KDE neon download
https://neon.kde.org/download

What are the difference;
1)
Kubuntu
and
Kubuntu Neon

2)
KDE Neon
User Edition 64bit
and
User LTS Edition 64bit

Thanks

In that case, I'd suggest Kubuntu 16.04 which is an LTS (Long Term Support) release.

What are the difference; Kubuntu and Kubuntu Neon

As I understand it, from the Neon website...

"KDE neon will provide users with more up-to-date packages of Qt in addition to cutting-edge KDE offerings."

so Neon is cutting edge as far as KDE is concerned whereas Kubuntu will give you fixed versions of the KDE stack but possibly more stable and predictable given you want to test a particular piece of software.

KDE Neon User Edition 64bit and User LTS Edition 64bit

Well, again, you can read as well as I can, and from the website I infer that the KDE Neon User Edition 64bit is bang up to date with KDE software, ie cutting edge whereas the LTS version is the latest officially released software, possibly more "stable and predictable" than the non LTS version.

I have kubuntu-16.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso download

Other advice also noted and thanks

I have a VirtualBox VM running Kubuntu 16.04. It works fine. I still prefer my main 14.04 Kubuntu desktop. I'm waiting for 18.04 before moving to KDE5. Maybe I'll give Neon a try just to see what it's about.

Hi,

Thanks for your advice.

Now I have kubuntu-16.04.1-desktop installed and up running on VM. I'm now busy to configure it because the fonts are too small. I haven't run KDE for prolonged time. It may take me a while to recall my memory.

Yes, still have problem running Kubuntu 16.04

On K start window clicking any item on Application/Computer/History will close the window. The application selected wouldn't start. Except Shutdown/Reboot under Leave. They work.

Please see attached photo

This only happens after installing VirtualBox Guest Addition. Please advise how to fix the problem.

Thanks

You might look over this issue;

and also look at halogen's fun thread (https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2329515),
maybe you can post something helpful.

VirtualBox Manager
On Settings -> Display
uncheck "Enable 3D Acceleration"

Then Kubuntu 16.04 works normal again.

I'm not allowed to select "Enable 2D Video Acceleration". Even check it. It will be unchecked automatically after starting Kubuntu 16.04

Thanks
