Ubuntu-Gnome 16.10. I can't find any indication of available software/system updates on the desktop. I'm guessing that an icon would not be visible unless there were updates available. But if I open Settings, Details, and choose "check for updates," updates are in fact available. Under the software update settings, I have security updates downloaded and installed automatically and I have chosen to be informed immediately if other updates are available. With Gnome, where on the desktop does an update applet appear? And if it's not appearing, is there a setting I can change? Thanks for your help. FYI, I was recently using openSUSE Leap 42.2 with the Gnome desktop and I was having the same problem.

Try reinstalling the 'update-notifier' package.
