My latest venture into customising DEs, this one using Ubuntu 16.04 on an old Asus EeePC900

Compiz standalone WM
Theme: Radiance-Blue-Spring (ravefinity-project ppa)
Icons: Vibrancy-Full-Dark-Blue-Vivid (ravefinity-project ppa)
Wallpaper: A photo by my older son of Waiheke Island (near Auckland)
File manager: Pcmanfm
Panel: tint2
Menu: compiz-boxmenu (https://github.com/compiz-reloaded/compiz-boxmenu) and xdgmenumaker (https://github.com/gapan/xdgmenumaker)

Not quite as lightweight as my Openbox session, but gives me a *much* wider range of themes.

My Xubuntu 17.04 setup with Conkywx 6.0 and a picture does not do the scrolling data justice. It would take a movie to show the true effects.

Here's a video I took a few months ago with 13 conkys running on Arch Linux Xfce. The reason the CPU usage is so high is the screen recorder app.

The conkys only use 10-20% CPU. But, as I said the video does justice to the scrolling text. I will go fullscreen too.

Yes Arch Linux maintains compiz with the whole shebang of possibilities that once were available on Ubuntu. Although, not sure, some I've never seen before Arch.

But, things like this, ffmpeg and many other packages are maintained and very useful in Arch Linux. ;)

As a matter of fact Arch Linux has 2 versions of compiz. The 0.9 version which is newer and I'm using the 0.8 version which is actually better IMO.
It has a Fusion Icon that actually works. You can easily change window managers from Compiz to Xfwm4 or Metacity, reload window manager and access emerald theme manager.
Also, you can change window decoration from Emerald to GTK+ window decorator.
Here is what I have installed:

ccsm 0.8.14-1
compiz-bcop 0.8.14-2
compiz-core 0.8.14-5
compiz-fusion-plugins-experimental 0.8.14-1
compiz-fusion-plugins-extra 0.8.14-3
compiz-fusion-plugins-main 0.8.14-1
compiz-gtk 0.8.14-5
compizconfig-python 0.8.14-1
fusion-icon 1:0.2.3-2
libcompizconfig 0.8.14-1

One of he nicest things I like about Arch Linux is that it never needs upgraded to a newer version, it's always pushing the cutting edge updates.

Since I've been using it, I've seen the kernel go from 4.8 to 4.10:

[cavsfan@Le-Beast ~]$ uname -r
4.10.13-1-ARCH

Oh, Vim always seemed to be too difficult but, I use nano quite a bit any more so, I guess I could learn to use Vim one day.
I use Sublime Text just to edit my conky files because you can open the whole folder at once.

Vim has a lot of plugins, there's a feature called netrw which comes bundled with it by default, that can be used to navigate files in a folder (use :Explore command). Although, Vim's quite different from nano, but there are a lot of resources available for learning. At the end, it's just a matter of committing to use it (and googling when you get stuck) :)

Thanks! I need to give it a try. I've learned a lot about nano but, there's something in Arch Linux that's default editor is Vim; I forget what at the moment but, it would come in handy to know both.

Sublime Text is pretty nice in that it can find a missing quote or comma. etc.

Here is my desktop. Ubuntu 16.04 LTS with Gnome Flashback. I like the clean look, so everything I need is either on my small bottom panel or the menu. When the weather is bad, I will sometimes put a weather widget on the desktop, but most of the time it stays clean.

I am tempted to install conky, but I am still new to Linux and don't feel too confident about configuring it yet.

Running terminator with "apt-get update and upgrade" running in the left root window. Screenfetch and Neofetch are running in the 2 right hand side windows of terminator with most of this threads relevant details showing in neofetch.

The wallpaper is from a site I won't link here as it could be regarded as "not safe for work" (artleo.com : "noparse" tags in use around that website to avoid direct linking.)

Though the image does suit my mood at the moment being laid up in hospital after dislocating my right shoulder (not good when you're extremely right handed ) and not being able to go home for over a week now, at least I was able to get my laptop picked up or I'd have gone troppo with "cabin fever". I go for the very simple look...I really like how in 17.10 you can move the dock to the bottom and centre it without having to use a 3rd party solution.
For those that want the dock at the bottom, but DON'T want the full width of the screen and the icons on the left (default behaviour) just use dconf editor:

/org/gnome/shell/extensions/dash-to-dock/

set 'extend-height' to OFF.

I posted that because it took me ages to find the solution and it might help people.

Sweet. I think I'll give that a try. I haven't been driving for 17 years and I used to pick up on new songs listening to the radio in the car or truck.
But, I don't hear new songs any more and am kind of stuck in a music rut of what I "used to hear". :P This would be a way to get back to some new music.

I like classic rock but, lean more towards alternative/grunge even at 59 lol!

Conkywx version 7 was released and so I can show it off now. :guitar:

Paramvir is the programmer/genius behind all of this and we do the testing for him. We also add tweaks here and there.
Like with Param's help I have an if statement in the weather conky on the right side so that if the UV rays get above 5, the text turns yellow and if 5 or below it is normal color.
Being in Florida, you really have to be aware of the UV rays. In the left big weather conky called Big Luamix there is a UV scale and in the middle is the sun's radiation.

Since there are no real rules we tweak it as we want to see it. Sorry to get off-topic, just thought I'd explain some things before the screen shot.

I'll say this again if you haven't heard me before, a picture does not do these conkys justice. The ones that scroll do so very smoothly. Something I don't believe any other conky does.

Here are a couple of shots of Ubuntu Trusty with i3 window manager installed and set up on a laptop (on the right half of the display) with an external hdmi monitor attached (on the left half of the display).

279266
Dropbox link for full resolution viewing:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/o60n6yow5jvrgf5/i3_with_i3-dmenu-desktop.png?dl=0

Some details showing in the first shot above...
i3-dmenu-desktop activated and with customized colours at the top left portion of the image.

i3blocks is installed and configured to generate the bottom bar and its display. i3blocks had to be compiled from source to work on Trusty, from 15.10 on it is available from the repositories as far as I'm aware.

The system tray on the right side of the external display's bottom bar is showing vlc, guake, alarmclock, network manager, onboard (on screen keyboard), artha and easystroke, running from start up. Compositing is performed by "compton" for applications like onboard which can be set up with a transparent background (not on show here but is set up in such a manner on this install).

The workspaces have fontawesome webfont icons attached to them for applications assigned to specific workspaces. Workspaces with only a number and a full colon symbol can have any other non assigned applications opened on them. The original config was set up for 10 workspaces, I added an additional 10 spaces for assigning applications to a specific workspace keeping the original 10 spaces as unassigned workspaces.

The background image is maintained at each start up using the application "nitrogen"; in the i3 config file the command "nitrogen --restore" re-enables the image at each start up. The image is a stitched together set of 6 photos I took while working at Camp Anderson in the Hamersley ranges region of northern Western Australia way back in 1993. I lived in that rail maintenance camp for 6 months back in 1993 working as an Electrical Fitter/Mechanic for the rail maintenance contractors.

279265
Dropbox link for full resolution viewing:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/b6ykrmzlgxo698c/i3-with-mplayer.png?dl=0

The second image above shows ...
Terminator with a custom layout displaying system information by both neofetch and screenfetch (showing both user and root details for each). WM, themes and fonts etc are shown here.

The neofetch ascii art symbols are a lie . A custom script of mine "neoset" can set any distro's art, or as shown windows or mac art, on an ubuntu install.
Terminator also has a semi transparent background set showing part of the main background image as set by nitrogen at start up.

A video is running in an mplayer window on the laptop (right hand side) half of the display. The video is set as "windowed" only to show the workspace tabs, normally such a video would be run at full screen and pressing "f" on the keyboard toggles it between a full or windowed display.

Finally: I've had an interesting last few days setting this up, particularly getting the fontawesome webfonts to display properly; took near a full day of fighting the install to get them to take properly, one line in the i3 config needed to be tweaked for that to fall into place finally :-D

Cheers, yeti.

New beast of a machine. Not sure how to get conkys to come close to filling a 2560x1440 4k monitor.
It was my son's and he had Windows 10 installed legacy so I installed it and Arch Linux in UEFI mode.
Arch needs a efi system partition 512mb but, windows only creates 100mb, so I had to install it all twice.
2nd time after I learned how to get the efi partition yuge enough.

Working on getting it all setup. 2-3 Ubuntu systems will come next and adding EFI to my grub wiki will be a challenge and learning experience.

It'll be a challenge for sure I've got some displaying right now but, they are very small and the hardware is different, like I don't have hddtemp, so I'll have to see what I do have.

I also have to customize my grub to work with EFI and update the grub Wiki.

So, much to do!

Hello axiomanarcho, please use the attachment facility by clicking on the paperclip or use url's for images because apart from bandwidth issues for some, it makes it difficult for those using mobile devices to browse the forum.

Got rid of the ugly system tray icons and changed the clock widget on my system tray area.

@axiomanarcho or create a login and use https://imgur.com to post pics. That way everyone using mobile devices to big monitors can view your pics.

Just make sure that when you select Linked BBCode that you select small or medium thumbnail or else they will be too big.

Cheers

I love the simplicity of Xubuntu menus. They are always the same. I've been though my share of DEs and Ubuntu + Xfce = Xubuntu is the best for me.

Lets see if this works I finally found a ambient window glow for the window edges that goes well with the desktop itself its a complete look and feel theme now.

Its so customize-able and stable at the moment its awesome, kde for years had a bad wrap it was ugly to a lot of people back in 3.5 days and talked about badly but these days you can make it into a beautiful desktop.

Just the regular default calendar. :)

Just the regular default calendar. :)

The default calendar is highly customizable. I use Xubuntu but, if you right click on the date/time and then click on properties you can customize it however you like.
If I don't have my favorite date/time pattern available, I open properties and a terminal and enter man strftime which provides every possible date/time value available.

This has worked for me on every version of Xubuntu as well as Arch Linux.

This is my new Xenial Xerus 16.04.4 LTS install. My first one on this new PC went awry for some reason.
I haven't gotten around to changing the wallpaper yet.

Put 4 different wallpapers on Cosmic 18.10 in Compiz on the Wallpaper plugin and here is what it looks like:

I didn't know the wallpaper plugin still worked until now. All 2560x1440 pixels.

Thanks! Yes, I haven't messed with the wallpaper plugin in several years but as you can see it is working well. The cube works too.

The Fusion Icon does not work on Ubuntu but, it works well on Arch Linux.

Check this one out: it does not show the Fusion Icon but, it shows Paramvir's Conkywx and the seamless way it scrolls.

Further to P-I H's screenshot, this is what Ubuntu 18.10 might look like if it gets to use the Communitheme which is being developed by both Canonical and members of the Ubuntu community.

Installed Debian Sid. Not much there yet.

It can have many DEs installed at the same time. I just like Xfce of course.

Went from Sid to Buster. Took about 5 installs before I got a good one.

I've got Conkywx version 7 on it now. Almost complete, just lacking a couple of ants.

Got rid of Debian. Every time I installed it it would change the UUID of my swap file. Grrr!

So, I installed openSUSE Tumbleweed with Xfce as the DE as it's also a rolling release like Arch and has the same kernel.
It's not much yet. I just figured out how to install Neofetch :lolflag:
