no volume

i installed xfce but i have to change the volume before i go into the xfce desktop thing and when im in it i hit the volume buttons and they do nothing if i could get some help that woukd be awesome

What OS did you start with?
How did you add xfce to the OS and what version of xfce is it?
Do you have a volume icon on the panel of the xfce desktop?
Do you have pulseaudio installed?
