View Full Version : 16.04 upgrade package file download failure

I've been trying to update Ubuntu 16.04 using the Software Updater and repeatedly experience failure to complete the package download, with the message "Failed to download package files. Check your internet connection". The packages that fail to download always add up to 25.2 MB. I've also tried this in Terminal using "sudo apt update", and the same 25.2 MB fails to download. Then, after consulting an ubuntuforums thread, I tried this:

ls -ld /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 82 Aug 24 09:50 /etc/apt/sources.list.d/dropbox.list
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 82 Aug 24 09:50 /etc/apt/sources.list.d/dropbox.list.distUpgrade
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 190 Aug 25 07:53 /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 189 Aug 24 09:50 /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list.distUpgrade
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 175 Aug 25 07:53 /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-earth.list
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 175 Aug 24 09:50 /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-earth.list.distUpgrade
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 180 Aug 25 07:53 /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-talkplugin.list
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 180 Aug 24 09:50 /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-talkplugin.list.distUpgrade
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 180 Nov 28 2012 /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-talkplugin.list.save

Are these the offending files? What should I do next? I about ready to punt and go back to 14.10, which worked fine!

... I've also tried this in Terminal using "sudo apt update", and the same 25.2 MB fails to download.

The actual terminal input and output when running the apt update command would probably be helpful.

Thanks howefield! Here you go. Note the line near the bottom that says "Need to get 25.2 MB/509 MB of archives." Failure appears to be associated with "google earth stable", which runs from the terminal command "google-earth".

Do you use the google-earth package ?

I'd suggest purging it and removing the ppa for it.

sudo apt-get purge google-earth

sudo mv /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-earth.list* ~/Documents

I'm guessing at the name of the package, if it isn't google-earth then change to suit.

There is a more graceful method to removing a PPA which is to use the ppa-purge application, it isn't installed by default. Once installed use sudo ppa-purge ppa_name to remove the ppa and put all related packages back to default.

Are you running a 32 bit system? There are a few mentions of i386 in your output, though there will probably be some of those showing also in a 64 bit system.
Google-chrome is no longer available for 32 bit systems in Linux at least, so I wonder about google-earth; no idea about Windows 32 bit systems.

No, 64 bit Lenovo ThinkPad T400.

FWIW, all this worked fine in Ubuntu 14.10 on same computer.

Forget 14.10, it is dead and no longer supported.

Thanks! Turns out the file is called "google-earth-stable:i386", which I think is now purged, along with autoremoving "packages [that] were automatically installed and are no longer required". But my attempt to purge the ppa for the same filename using command string

sudo mv /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-earth-stable:i386.list* ~/Documents

failed with this result:

~$: sudo mv /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-earth-stable:i386.list* ~/Documents
~$: command not found
lane@lane-T400:~$ mv: cannot stat '/etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-earth-stable:i386.list*': No such file or directory
No command 'mv:' found, did you mean:
Command 'mvn' from package 'maven' (universe)
Command 'mvs' from package 'libwww-mediawiki-client-perl' (universe)
Command 'mv' from package 'coreutils' (main)
mv:: command not found

Does this mean that all those docs are already gone?

Thank you again.

No, it just means that you didn't follow instruction or more likely I wasn't clear enough ;)

I took an attempt at the filename and kudos for sussing the correct name and getting it right but the path to the repository information was correct, in fact you had already posted it, so..

sudo mv /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-earth.list* ~/Documents

should still have been used, inserting ":i386" into the path made it incorrect, as the error said "No such file or directory"

Good luck :)

"sudo apt upgrade" went to completion without errors or escapes. I rebooted. Except for a few scary moments during which the display was all hashed up, ubuntu 16.04 booted up. I open the Software Updater, which gave me the message "Failed to download repository information. Check your internet connection." So some file(s) it doesn't like is(are) still present.

So I entered "sudo apt upgrade" again and got this:

Suggestions?

Sure, let's see the output of

egrep -v '^#|^ *$' /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*

This will just list all the repositories so we can see what you have still got in use, but it appears the google ones need removing.
