Can someone recommend a 12 inch laptop under 500$ that will load ubuntu.....My old Toshiba wont take the newer Ubuntu...

Look for a refurbished (second hand) professional class computer (for example Dell Latitude, HP Elitebook or Probook or Lenovo). That way you get more computer for the money, and linux is likely to work better than with brand new hardware.

Have you tried installing something lighter like Lubuntu on the Toshiba?

Ubuntu 14 works fine. But I need a new small laptop. What are people going to do if the new generation of chips doesnt work with Linux??
