Feedback and Helping

If you would like to help shape Ubuntu, take a look at the list of ways you can participate at

http://www.ubuntu.com/community/participate/
Your comments, bug reports, patches and suggestions will help ensure that our next release is the best release of Ubuntu ever. If you feel that you have found a bug please read:

http://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs
Then report bugs using apport in Ubuntu. For example:

ubuntu-bug linux
will open a bug report in Launchpad regarding the linux package.

If you have a question, or if you think you may have found a bug but aren't sure, first try asking on the #ubuntu or #ubuntu-bugs IRC channels on Freenode, on the Ubuntu Users mailing list, or on the Ubuntu forums:

ELMIT; Ouch !

Sad that these things happen, generally because of getting in a hurry and the system not fully updated at the time of the release -upgrade.

The upgrade has completed but there were errors during the upgrade process

Let's see what condition the condition is in.
Post back the outputs - Between Code Tags - of terminal commands:

cat /etc/issue
uname -r
cat -n /etc/apt/sources.list
tail -v -n +1 /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

code tag tutorial:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2171721&p=12776168#post12776168

We see where we go from here .

all in the process

ELMITl over all;

Not as bad as I might have anticipated.
Keep in mind that the updater DID NOT enable your 3rd party PPAs, but that is not a factor at this time.

What is of concern is the version miss-matches .
Let's take the package manager's advise and see if we can eliminate a couple of these miss-matches .
See what results:

sudo apt update
sudo apt -f install

What ever the system will not fix for us, well we got to give the system a helping hand.

Done!

One question came up, which /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades I should use. I selected the new one.

apt list --upgradable

Listing... Done
systemd-sysv/xenial-updates 229-4ubuntu12 amd64 [upgradable from: 225-1ubuntu9.1]
N: Ignoring file '50unattended-upgrades.ucf-old' in directory '/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/' as it has an invalid filename extension
N: There are 3 additional versions. Please use the '-a' switch to see them.

ELMIT; Ho Kay;

As to that :

N: Ignoring file '50unattended-upgrades.ucf-old' in directory '/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/' as it has an invalid filename extension

run the system for a few days, and if no problems with the package management system then delete this old no longer needed file .
So presently what results with a new look?

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

If all is clean then is time to go back at look at the PPAs and see what you might still want and see if they are still supported in xenial.

The upgrade was (maybe) necessary for the wacom tablet. To see if the tablet is now recognized I click on System and then onto Wacom Tablet. However System does not open, and gives me these lines in syslog:

Nov 15 03:45:48 desktop kernel: [71128.897659] unity-control-c[23062]: segfault at 0 ip 00007fc3185a9549 sp 00007ffcfd44ea60 error 4 in libcogl.so.20.4.1[7fc318578000+b2000]
Nov 15 03:46:16 desktop kernel: [71157.129403] unity-control-c[23080]: segfault at 0 ip 00007f2ca53a9549 sp 00007ffc97cc49a0 error 4 in libcogl.so.20.4.1[7f2ca5378000+b2000]

I moved 50unattended-upgrades.ucf-old into a directory in my home folder and used sudo apt autoremove to get rid of the message.

What are the next steps?

ELMIT; Well !

Look'n good .
As to the wacom tablet; that is a subject for a new thread .

Let's take the package manager's advise and remove those "no longer required" :

sudo apt autoremove

Reboot the system a couple of times and see what the booting kernel is ( uname -r ) :
I do expect to see:

4.4.0.47.50

Still stable and all happy ? ->
And next is for you to examine that list of PPAs and decide on what you want to keep, and then see if they are still supported.

tail -v -n +1 /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*

oh happy times
