Can't sign in to gmail under new install Lubuntu 12.04, but wifi seems to work

Not entirely sure this is the right place to post this, but pls advise better location if not.

with a HP netbook in getting WiFi to work (at least in some places, i.e., I can ping and reach various websites, e.g., msn), but not google.com and when I try to log into my gmail account, I get the message "The sync server is busy. Please try again later." First of all, I don't believe it.

Secondly I have retried several times. No cigar.

Any suggestions?

Lubuntu 12.04 is out of support. I recommend that you begin with a fresh install of 16.04.1.

That's an odd one
Try signing into the Google Dashboard - http://www.google.com/dashboard

You might get a bar at the top asking you if you want to sync your data- accept this
If that's all good- what does the Google Dashboard say? "Nothing interesting here", do you see your synced files? Something else?

If all fails, you can also try rebuilding your Chrome profile
/home/<user>/.config/google-chrome/ then rename the Default folder and reopen Chrome
