I have a very old computer that I would like to install Ubuntu on but I can't seem to get the cd to boot. What do I need to do? It has always worked in the past?

Please post the full hardware specs of this "very old computer." Does it meet Ubuntu's system requirements (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements)? If not, try Lubuntu or Xubuntu, both of which have lighter requirements than regular Ubuntu.

This is not old gear. Just feed it X/Lubuntu as mentioned above and you should be all set.

With only 512 of RAM your best bet is to stick to a lighter distribution of Ubuntu http://lubuntu.net/ it will perform better. With other distros Ubuntu requires more resources

I want...

...is not a good course for troubleshooting. More efficient is to keep the mind open for more than one solution, at least for the short term.

The fact that Ubuntu used to run on this computer (when? which release?) does not guarantee that it's also possible with 16.04.

I still suggest that you begin with one of the light Buntus but try installing from a USB stick this time. When we know how this works we can decide the next step.

The last diistro I ran on the computer was ubunutu studio 12.04.1 64 version. It seem windows 10 controlling the manual boot process so i can't load a cd. I will try the usb boot, but this motherboard was never ment to boot from flashdrive.

Even with BIOS boot you must turn off Windows 10's fast start up or always on hibernation.

Just about every system in last 10 years boots from flash drive. But some only can use certain ports, or must have settings in BIOS set to allow or turn on boot from flash drive.
