I am happy with Cinelerra, in large part due to this web site:

There are also numerous tutorials on Youtube.

When I have to edit a video - about once a year - I try numerous editors and somehow always end up using kdenlive again. iMovie on a Mac is more slick, but kdenlive is the only thing that can handle my video codecs.

I have just used openshot recently. I had done an audio recording and wanted to put it up on youtube. I did not actually have a video so I wanted to use a slideshow. The youtube video manager was just really difficult to work with so Openshot provided a real simple way to get an audio track up to youtube with no muss or fuss. It is in ubuntu Software Center on trusty.

Av*Synth (AviSynth(+) on Windows/Wine, AvxSynth on Linux/OSX) or VapourSynth (cross-platform) :P

Disregarding the fact that AvxSynth is both a dead project and horrendously outdated compared to upstream AviSynth, and it's probably a better idea to wait until AviSynth+ actually makes the leap to cross-platform; preliminary support for building with MinGW-w64/GCC already exists, it's now more about trying to abstract the win32-specific parts of the code and fill in the gaps.

Try Lightworks if you want to use an extraordinarily powerful, professional NLE. It is not open-source but there is a free version.

I prefer kdenlive. A video editing GUI for KDE that provides dual video monitors, a multi-track timeline, clip list, customizable layout support, basic effects, and basic transitions.
