View Full Version : [SOLVED] 16.04 (new installation) defaults to "emergency mode"

This is probably the worst problem I have had in all the years I have been using Ubuntu. This one is not a silly error, from what I have seen.

First of all, the machine works very well indeed from the live usb. There does not seem to be a problem with the hardware.

After the first boot, it simply sends me straight to the emergency mode and demands that I go to "systemctl reboot" to get the system running and then only in recovery mode.

I have reinstalled about five times so far, I have burned a new version o another computer and tried again, and that did nothing to help.

I have noticed that it seems to hang up, according to the logs, on the swap on the disk I use to boot, but that is just a line on the page that comes just before it flips into emergency mode.

I have read that this is s problem with /etc/fsck, but after having said it, they seem to offer nothing else that I can fathom.

I usually have a glimmer of an idea of where the problem may lie, but not in this case.

I have ruled out:

having updates and third party software enabled ticked or not when installing
Having the boot disk constantly mounted (at least from what I could see)
Problems with my (remote) .home file
Grub problems
Hardware problems

I have also noticed when it begins the process, it informs my that there are some non UEFI files hanging about and they might give me problems. This is a complete reinstall, so I do not see what that could mean, However, I have not personally reformatted the drive. I am assuming that is done when I tell it to get rid of the old and plant the new. Thinking about it, that may be a good idea to try, but, if you do not mind, may I ask if that is possibly a waste of time?

Thinking about it, the disk is a legacy and came from an old machine that did not have UEFI, but it never seemed to cause any problem with Ubuntu 15.10 and earlier flavours used on this my first UEFI machine.

Normally I would go to the boot repair disk, but I found nothing on that to really do anything for me. I ahve tried all of the "advanced" options and found when I take the "DPKG" option it usually freezes at the "braille" point at the end and it can hold there until the computer gets tired.

I am afraid I am once again stumped. I am not even certain what information would help to solve this. It is a pain and the graphics I have to use are not my favourite

Cheers

Dual-boot or only Ubuntu? Is the install media using running in UEFI mode, while the host PC is running in Legacy mode?

Cheers!

This is an Ubuntu only machine. I am beginning to suspect the live USB is not UEFi and since it is inserted while I am installing, it is seen as an "intruder." I suspect that is exactly what is happening there, but it is still reverting to emergency mode and not letting me boot in normally.

Looking at the log before it goes to emergency mode, it appears to have loaded up my boot disk: at least there are all "OKs" and then there is no more I just get shunted into emergency mode

On reflection, I seem to remember that 15.10 was beginning to act "funny" before I installed 16.04. It was not accepting an automatic booi and forced me to go to boot selection every time. I thought that might have been a minor problem. I ignored it for a few days until the frustration forced me to move to 16.04. I was going to go wait fro 16.10, but I thought this would solve a number of irritations. Once again, if you scratch it will only get worse.

Cheers

I am sure you would be interested in seeing the fsck file, probably make things easier, but I cannot find, more likely understand, the needed command. If you tell me how, I shall comply. Probably has the answer, I would have thought.

I have found the dmesg command from http://askubuntu.com/questions/75325/syst (http://askubuntu.com/questions/389084/syst) . I notice there are some errors on my sdc which happens to hold my .home file. It is an old file that I use with every flavour and have done for a number of years, in case that could be the problem

I am afraid the output is not helping me much as I have no idea how to tackle any of the problems or if they need to be tackled
Lots of other possibles from that site, but I am not certain they are of any use here. I am enjoying looking at the lines and wondering what they mean. Sort of like reading Welsh when you have no idea of the language

A solution has been found, but I think it might be helpful to those who follow if I mark down what I did and why.

Looking at the dmesg list, I saw there was a problem with my .home folder (sdc1) being corrupted. The suggested repair was to use the fsck command. Since that does not work with a mounted disk, I went to the live USB. It was not very useful:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ fsck
fsck from util-linux 2.27.1

Since that did not work, I went online to see what I could find and I ran into this page:

https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1508294 .

They suggested I use e2fsck from the live USB. I did:

$ sudo e2fsck -C0 -p -f -v /dev/sdc
e2fsck: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sdc
/dev/sdc:
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a valid ext2/ext3/ext4
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2/ext3/ext4
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
or

e2fsck -b 32768 <device>

Well, that was interesting and it suggested a repair. The site suggested something similar so:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo e2fsck -C0 -p -f -v /dev/sdc1

I thought: "That solves the problem with .home...I hope!"

I then rebooted and...the rest is history! That or history is having a rest.

In either case, it appears that the problem, being a proper prestidigitator, pointed at a problem with the sda drive while hiding the problem (it would appear!) in sdc. Clever little mischief maker!

As always, I do hope this helps another who walks this way. This crooked and very convoluted way.

Cheers to all,

Frank Sirett
