View Full Version : [SOLVED] Ubuntu starts but won't talk to anybody else.

I recently had this thread:

but the pressure of work took over and I was a while getting back to it.

Now I have downloaded and created a 16.04 DVD and installed this alongside the previously installed 16.4 which works fine, BUT...

It won't connect to any other machine on the network or allow any one to access itself. I do seem to have made one mistake in that it has installed with a different username to the one I have used for the last 25 years.

Also...

The original 16.04 has been moved to its own partition which I can access which is a good thing.

The other machines on the network are Windows 7 and a Samsung Tablet. Three of us work from home and this Ubuntu machine has acted as a file server.

Using a different user-name the system created a different host-name.
You have to edit the files /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts.
You will find the host-name you used before in your former installation in the same files.
after editing the files run
sudo service hostname restart
Try out and see if Ubuntu is more talkative now...

Thank you for your help and I thought I had posted a reply to this, so...

I have done that but on typing:

sudo service hostname restart

and entering the password I got:

Failed to restart hostname.service: Unit hostname.service is masked

Reboot (that will for sure restart the service)

Failure, I'm afraid. 'Network' doesn't even appear as an option in the list in 'Files'.

Someone has suggested that the problem may be to do with the Samba password and its settings. How would I go about checking this and its password? What do you think?

Samba needs a bit of manual configuration.
Here you can find some help how to configure Samba:

Before you edit the Samba-configuration-file you should create a backup of this file, just for the case something goes wrong.

sudo cp -pf /etc/samba/smb.conf /etc/samba/smb.conf.bak
will do that, it is also suggested in the second link and i would recommend to do so.
To edit this configuration-file might be a bit difficult...
Here is my edited configuration-file:

This is just a simple home-network, but a working solution, as an example for you how it could look...
