boot splash freeze

I hope I'm in the right place. Today I installed ubuntu 16.04 and everything worked fine until I did a bad thing I did a sudo apt-get install gnome. Now the machine gets to the boot splash and no further, I did a control alt f-4 the screen says start on hold until boot completes. So I tried to restart and get the same thing. I tried to boot from a live usb it won't even recognize it. So I'm sure the grub is toast, anyone have any ideas on the fix.

Hi, I am new to the forum so my replay is really intuitive reading your post: Is it possible the PC, Laptop is a bit old or have a really old harddisk?
If not could you tell some info about the computer you tried to install Ubuntu 16.04, Thanks.
