I upgraded today from an onscreen prompt from Xubuntu to move up to 16.04 (i386). When the PC rebooted after the upgrade all I got was a black screen with a cursor flashing. I suspected the original gpu drivers weren't compatible with 16. After fighting to get the onboard graphics drivers working, I gave up and inserted an Nvidia GeForce4 MX 420 card from an old donor machine. This time I got some results but only at 800 x 600 at a displayed refresh rate of 0.0 Hz (not a misprint!). I really struggled with this until I found a closed thread on here which saved my bacon and left with with a lovely smooth graphics performance. I want to thank user Bashing-om (https://ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=1111508) for the help he unwittingly gave me to solve my problem in this thread (https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2229183&page=2).

Thank you :)

It is very kind of you to thank Bashing-om for indirectly helping you (and showing that the forums are doing their job), but I have moved your thread to the Cafe because it is a testimonial and not a support thread. You are welcome to discuss things 'buntu here as much as you like. ;)

I suspected the original gpu drivers weren't compatible with 16.

It would be the other way around. Each new version of Ubuntu and its flavours such as Xubuntu will come with newer proprietary video drivers. Which are not always compatible with old video adpters.

Regards.
