Slow update installs

I use ubuntu mate 14.04 on a 16 gb thumb drive. Works great except too many updates. And updates download quickly but take FOREVER to install and use all my cpu when this is going on. Already unchecked most of my software repositories that were extra and problem still exists. Even got rid of apport, as i thought this might be the problem. Any body else experiencing slow, very slow update installations??
