Ok, so I created a bootable USB drive for installing Ubuntu, but ubuntu complains about the fact that I did this using UNetbootin and that it can cause mystery crashes, and that I should use the Ubuntu recommended method for creating USB media. Sure enough, the install (16.04) crashes a few steps later.

So, I go to check Ubuntu "recommended" way, and there it is - telling me (drum roll please) to use UNetbootin (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-mac-osx).

So, what is the "right" way to make bootable media - keep in mind that I only have OSX in this situation...

This worked for me: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/How%20to%20install%20Ubuntu%20on%20MacBook%20using %20USB%20Stick#Manual_Approach

Thanks, I am going to test that out.

Meanwhile, the main issue I found with the USBs generated by UNetbootin is that the package filenames that are too long (over 32 character? I did not count) got cut off and shortened (in some cases "udeb" became "ude" and the main package name before the dos extension got cut off), which causes installer to fail to find the packages. It being rewritable USB media, I just renamed the package files to their original names and it installed just fine.
