(yes, she keeps asking me to load Ubuntu but I haven't had time)

Shame on you! :p

Here's mine:

1. Homebuilt AthlonXP 2400 system:
Partitions:
a. White-Ice: Windows XP Pro SP2
b. Black-Ice: Ubuntu 6.06

I'm trying to get my wife to switch, but unfortunately she can't live without Photoshop CS2 and I haven't gotten it to run at even close to decent yet.

2. Homebuilt Gaming Rig - Melted about 2 months ago.

3. Work Desktop - P4 3.4GHZ - Windows XP Corporate

I'm currently in the process of looking for a high end laptop that I can run Ubuntu on for working at home, and have a small partition of XP for the occasional game I can't get to run. I was looking at a couple laptop companys that ship with Ubuntu, but none of them have the specs I was looking for, so now I'm looking at getting a custom built Sager from XoticPC.com.

I have only one roommate who uses linux (knoppix), but he's too lazy to do anything with it, and sadly seems to boot windows a lot. For shame.

I have 1 Mac user in the house too.

My work computer uses XP. :sad:

My computers:

:: PC #1
3.0 GHz Intel integrated vid
Running Ubuntu, with extra partition for distro-testing (currently edgy, there is some DAW software only packaged for Edgy I'm trying out)

:: PC #2
(slow, 128 RAM) PC running xubuntu

:: Laptop
733 MHz Sony Vaio laptop
Running Xubuntu
NOTE: Extra RAM did not work when my bro ran windows on it, it does work with xubuntu. :-k

EDIT:
:: XBOX
733 MHz 64 RAM
Running Xbox Media Center, Gentoox, Xebian

Overall it seems Ubuntu runs on my hardware.

BTW, I'm trying to convince my boss to let me install my own OS, slow but promising progress. :D

And of course a sleuth of servers to maintain. Most are running Win2K3 or debian. All HP rack-servers. This is not a fair comparison, since most of my machines are running Virtual Server or VMWare server. Ideal for testing network stuff and sandboxing internet crap. Counting the images than another 100+ servers should be added to the mix, running anything from win98 to vista and debian to redhat server.

Since you asked:

Desktop: Dual athlon MP 1800, ubuntu dapper
Laptop: Compaq M600 PIII-600 ubuntu dapper
Wife' computer: Dell precision 220 PIII-800 winXP
Daughter's laptop: Acer PIII-550 laptop WinXP
file server: Dell Optiplex PIII-866 ubuntu dapper
Web server: Sun Ultra 1/E ubuntu dapper
Firewall: Dell Optiplex PII-400 running IPCop 1.4.10
General muck-around box: Dell Optiplex PIII-667 running slackware 10.2 atm

Now it gets a bit more interesting:

SGI Indigo2 purple running irix 6.5.22
SGI Indy running nothing at the moment
HP 712/80 running NeXTStep (really)
DEC Alpha 3000/400 running netBSD

Other computers not running anything at the moment:
SGI Indigo2 teal
Sun Netra T1
Sun Sparcstation LX
DEC Personal DECStation 4000/25 (IIRC)
Power Mac G3 (beige)
White box 386DX40 (Complete with '387 and 20MB of 30-pin RAM)
2 or 3 Dell Optiplex PII boxes
Assorted other whitebox intel machines (boring boring boring)

I really want an IBM RS/6000 machine, but can't justify buying one off ebay since I have so many other machines not doing anything.

I'm a bit of a collector, can you tell??

Cheers,
mvdw

No way!

It's true; a guy I met on the internet sent me a couple of bi-fat disks a while back (NeXTStep 3.3 for SPARC and PA-RISC machines); I was always intending to put it on the sparcstation LX, but it doesn't have a framebuffer and I don't have any Sun monitors anymore anyway.

Then I acquired the 712/80, and installed it - it's really very advanced for its age. The main problem with the setup is that the HP doesn't really like my KVM so I have to plug in a Real Keyboard when I boot it up (which admittedly is not often).

You can get a similar experience (only with more crashing) by running GNUStep as your window manager. IME GNUStep is unstable, while NeXTStep is stable as anything in the limited time I've run it, anyway.

*sigh*

Most likely that is because GNUstep is no window manager and therefor cannot be run as one. In fact, GNUstep cannot even be run, because it is just a bunch of libraries, see below.

You are probably referring to Window Maker, which does indeed look NeXT'ish, but has absolutely nothing to do with GNUstep.

GNUstep isn't even a desktop environment, like GNOME or KDE -- it is a development framework, see the first like over at GNUstep's website (http://www.gnustep.org/) :

GNUstep is a cross-platform, object-oriented framework for desktop application development.
