I have an old Intel Celeron M380 1.6ghz single core laptop with ddr2 2gb of ram. I am just wondering how well Ubuntu will run on a single core.

It says it needs a dual core.the laptop came with windows xp but the code has worn off and I had to put a new drive in it.

So instead of paying for a new copy of Windows, I want to put Ubuntu on it.

I just want to know if it will run properly.

Booting from a Live DVD/USB will give you a rough idea of how it would perform when installed, but a machine that old probably also has a pretty old graphics card which would likely be the biggest bottleneck to acceptable performance. Your best bet might be to try Lubuntu or perhaps Xubuntu.

Hello and welcome, A lighter distribution might be the best choice do to the fact it requires less resources. Surprisingly enough I have some very old machines that are running Ubuntu 16.04 and doing very well

The best thing about Ubuntu is you can run a live session and it will give you some idea on what to expect

Ubuntu MATE (https://ubuntu-mate.org/download/) might be more responsive on your machine

+1! That or Lubuntu, or Xubuntu.
