I have a Ubuntu server and Ubuntu laptop. The server will be pluged in to surround sound, I want to control whats played through it from my laptop.

I don't really want to use VNC because I don't want to open up vnc everytime I want to play music or change the track. Is there a way to do it through say amarok? Also i'd rather the server stay command line, but if this isn't possible then I'll install gnome. ty!

check out MPD. You can store your music on the server, and use a MPD client to control it across the network.

Thankyou for the reply, although I was just wondering, is it possible to somehow mount my servers sound on to my laptop, so that anything my laptop plays will go through the server?

Im not really sure how sound works at all so this is just a bit of a sortof educated guess really ;)
