I performed a:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop from Xubuntu

and get a:

dpkg -l|grep ubuntu-desktop
ii ubuntu-desktop 1.325 amd64 The Ubuntu desktop system
ii xubuntu-desktop 2.180 amd64 Xubuntu desktop system

result from the terminal, which shows that Ubuntu is on the machine. However when I logout I have no login option for Ubuntu. What went wrong or what can I do to fix this?
thanks in advance!

On the login screen, on the upper panel, there should be a round icon at the right-hand end (I don't recall the symbol in it). That should have a drop-down to choose from.
