Hi All,

My first post, but I've been using Ubuntu for quite a while. Usually I can solve problems on my own as I don't mind reading a bit and fixing these things is a bit of a hobby!

However, I've gotten a bit keen and installed v16.04 before reading too much about it. I have an ATI HD6970 and whoops. All sorts of problems.

First off is that the monitor is the wrong resolution at 1400 x 1050, not 1680 x 1050 as it should be. I've tried adding modes to xrandr but no go. The output of xrandr is:
xrandr
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 1400 x 1050, current 1400 x 1050, maximum 1400 x 1050
default connected primary 1400x1050+0+0 0mm x 0mm
1400x1050 77.00*

So that doesn't look quite right.

The major problem is the graphics driver though. No hardware acceleration I think: Graphics : Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.8, 256 bits)

How on earth do I enable hardware acceleration with the radeon driver now being used?

In fact, I'm not even sure it is being used as the output from

lsmod | grep radeon
or
lsmod | grep amd

is nothing whatsoever!
I upgraded from 15.10, so one suggestion might be to fresh install, but I'd rather understand and fix the problem, if its possible at this stage.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Have you tried setting it manually to test it? Afterward, you can force it in xorg.conf if needs be.
xrandr --output <displayname> --mode 1680x1050
Displayname is not the X11 screen, but the hardware name, such as DVI-0. You can get the displayname by using xrandr -q.

It's enabled by default as long as Mesa is installed. You can verify this with glxinfo from the mesa-utils package. For example, from Debian 8:

If you were expecting OpenGL 4 support, I am sorry to say that you are out of luck. 16.04's Radeon driver does not support OpenGL higher than 3.3 as far as I know.


I would suggest that if you must have OpenGL 4 or full hardware acceleration, that you use Ubuntu 14.04 or Debian 8, as both support FGLRX and your generation of hardware. AMD is not releasing an updated driver for older cards, and even some of the users with R7 cards will have to wait until the new AMDGPU hybrid driver is released (if it isn't already).

I realise this looks bad! In my opinion, Canonical should not have used Xorg 1.18 for an LTS version when it knew well in advance of the release date that this was going to be a problem.

I have tried inserting manually, what I inveriably get is:

warning: output DVI-1 not found; ignoring

I get a fairly extensive output from glxinfo. I'm pretty sure mesa is isntalled, but looking at the graphics options I still see
Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.8, 256 bits)

If I boot to live cd then I get Gallium.... CAYMAN ATI... and it looks like I think it should.

According to this, you are not using an AMD/ATI card to render, even if you have one. Rather, you are using VMWare's hardware interface, so I expect your problems have less to do with AMD's driver issues and more with the interface.

Are you using VMWare in some fashion? If you are, this changes things remarkably. You cannot expect full OpenGL acceleration inside of VmWare without intervention. You can't even get full access to the video card. There are exceptions - full PCI passthrough or a special guest driver - but not normally. If you are using the guest driver, you should expect performance to be degraded.



If I boot to live cd then I get Gallium.... CAYMAN ATI... and it looks like I think it should.


If you boot from a disc then you are using the card directly, and everything will probably function normally.

I'm not one to tell you what to do, but I have to ask about the situation if I am going to be of use to you. Why are you using Vmware? Are you running Ubuntu in VmWare workstation on Windows or something like that?

From an upgrade, right?
Did you use the fglrx closed source driver in 15.10?

If you did, do you have a leftover xorg.conf file in /etc/X11?

If you do, delete that file.

Also, maybe double check that there isn't any leftover blascklist files in the directory /etc/modprobe.d.
Anything in there would be named something like fglrx-blacklist or something to that affect.

I would think that something happening the first place (the X11 folder) would be more a possibility than something happening in the second place (the modprobe.d folder)
But, hey, doesn't hurt to look.

TJ, I am not knowingly using VMWare! Unless something very funny has happened during the upgrade. In principle it is a very straight forward install of ubuntu. It has been upgraded from 14.xx to 15.10 to 16.04 withou a fresh install though.

Deadflowr: you are absolutely right, I was using the proprietary driver in 15.10. I had a search for xorg.conf files, backed then up and removed them, but I suppose I might have missed one.same with the blacklisting. I found a couple of places where Radeon was blacklisted, but I think I got rid of all those too. I'll have another hunt this evening.

I'm sorry if I seemed accusatory in any way, I actually meant to sound confused. I was just utterly baffled as your readouts are so bizarre. The fact that you have a Vmware driver in your GLX stack is a serious impediment to getting things working correctly. It shouldn't be there unless you are using Vmware. I wonder if Vmware maintains the VGA driver also? Well in any case, I think Ubuntu or Xorg mangled it for you, and if so, they need to look to fixing that. This should have NEVER, EVER happened on a stable release. As a programmer and longtime Linux advocate, I feel embarrassment explaining that it was broken, even though I am not working on Ubuntu releases.

After you mentioned that upgrade, I'd bet that your problem is that the AMD firmware files were removed during the upgrade and need to be replaced. They are present on the CD which is why it worked when you booted from the disc. They have to be installed for the Radeon driver to work correctly at higher resolutions. It didn't occur to me, until you mentioned the upgrade because they are normally always present on Ubuntu - even if they are unused.

Try this in a terminal, then reboot. It may fix you up.

sudo apt-get install --reinstall firmware-linux firmware-linux-nonfree


They might have renamed the package on Ubuntu, so it may take some trial and error.

I'm just guessing at the moment since I can't take your stack apart, but it has been my experience that Ubuntu does not handle "in-place" upgrades as well as its parent version Debian does. If that doesn't fix it, you may want to consider backing up your data and doing a fresh install.

Ah, thank you! Projects change corporate sponsors like underclothes. I don't keep up with who is sponsoring what. I am concerned that his/her Xorg does not seem to be detecting and using the proper firmware.

I apologize if I sound a bit too dramatic. I just get really annoyed when stable releases get unforgivably sloppy. I feel there is a certain obligation in my profession (programmer) to deliver something that actually works as advertised. Things like this make us look bad.

Right, now on to installing all the bits and bobs again. Highlights will include the Canon MG7750 which was a right arseache last time and I never got working fully properly! Hope steam backs up to cloud!

A "stable" release is something intended for general use by everyone. 16.04 is a "stable" release, because unlike the other Ubuntu releases, it intended for long-term use - the next 5 years. The LTS releases are the basis for Ubuntu Server.

I admit, I am somewhat critical of Ubuntu LTS, since LTS releases are based on Debian Testing - which is generally considered "unstable" by long-term Debian users.

Still, I consider myself fortunate to be able to help someone on occasion.

From an upgrade, right?
Did you use the fglrx closed source driver in 15.10?

If you did, do you have a leftover xorg.conf file in /etc/X11?

If you do, delete that file.

Also, maybe double check that there isn't any leftover blascklist files in the directory /etc/modprobe.d.
Anything in there would be named something like fglrx-blacklist or something to that affect.

I would think that something happening the first place (the X11 folder) would be more a possibility than something happening in the second place (the modprobe.d folder)
But, hey, doesn't hurt to look.

This advice is exactly what I need!
The blacklist-radeon.conf was present in my /etc/modprobe.d/. Seems that it wasn't automatically removed after deinstalling proprietary AMD drivers(I just tried to install them in recently).
