After upgrading from 15.10 to 16.04 I am getting this error and cannot login. Could someone please help? I am on Intel graphics. lshw shows driver = i915. Reinstalled gdm and selected lightdm. But still the graphics giving the same error. Previously 15.10 both kubuntu and unity were running fine. Please help.

I tried this link also : http://askubuntu.com/questions/4662/where-is-the-x-org-config-file-how-do-i-configure-x-there

But no luck.

I have recoded the output of the following commands and log and they are attached for any of your kind review.

1) inxi-SCG

2) lshw-C display

3) lightdm.log - zipped

I'm completely stuck and out of plans how to handle this.
Any pointer or help what is going wrong would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Tried to configure X with Xorg :1 -configure. Got error that no device found.

Attached the files of the following commands and log:

1) lsmod
2) lspci
3) lspci -k
4) lspci -vvv
5) Xorg.0.log

The screen comes blank now after boot.
If someone can get me some pointer where else to look into would be greatly appreciated.

P.S.: I have a Samsung Series 9 laptop. 15.10 was running fine (both ubuntu and kubuntu) before this upgrade.

Thanks,

A lot of the time, many people have had problems with upgrades from one version to another. If you can, just install 16.04 from a USB or DVD. Make sure everything is backed up; from a terminal or console you can use rsync to back up /home to another drive. It will take a while, of course.

Thanks and appreciate your advice. The problem is that I have so many programs and fonts and software installed that reinstalling them would be a nightmare now.

Now the following is shown if I try to configure X: it says, No devices to configure. Configuration failed.

Is it something to do with my laptop screen which it cannot identify?

Thanks.

After a lot of different options that I tried I am finally able to start the system UI with a tty login and by typing the following:

service lightdm start

I could finally do this after:

systemctl enable lightdm.service
systemctl start lightdm.service

Now the environment selector is coming and I can choose btw ubuntu and kubuntu (which I installed thru apt-get).

But still booting gives me a blank screen first. I have to go to tty1 and login at the comsole and then need to start the lightdm as mentioned above.

Can anybody please tell me how to fix this?

Thanks

Just to add one observation: Ubuntu Upstart Option in Grub boot is working perfectly. It goes directly to the unity launcher.

Please refer to the many Posts applicable to the i915/Kernel issues. I am running a very old P4 with the i915. It does not work great, however it does work to a point where at least I am able to utilize Lubuntu as a secondary OS. The Font Rendering is horrible, however at least I am able to tweak it a bit. The best solution I have found is to do a fresh install and then, after reboot, immediately go into Recovery Mode and install the generic Intel X-Org Video Driver. The you have to shut down completely and do a cold reboot. Then you should have a Desktop and be able to at least update and install your Programs (except for some Multimedia codes such as the GStreamer).

Please be aware that the OS will not work perfectly. You will receive some error messages and some Desktop freezes in which you will have to reboot to correct.

Thanks for your reply and pointers. I have tried the following options with some combinations at the grub, but nothing happens:

modeset
i915.invert_brightness=1 (this makes screen completely blank)
i915.preliminary_hw_support=1
acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor

i915.preliminary_hw_support=1 nouveau.blacklist=1 edd=on nolapic pcie_aspm=force tpm_tis.interrupts=0 (so does this)

Thanks

Thanks and appreciate your advice. The problem is that I have so many programs and fonts and software installed that reinstalling them would be a nightmare now.

I think you have installed so much stuff that an online upgrade will be a nightmare.

I think you have installed so much stuff that an online upgrade will be a nightmare.

So does it mean that Ubuntu won't properly upgrade if I have installed programs etc on it?
Sorry I failed to understand your argument.

In theory it should but in reality if often doesn't.
Since you have been fighting with the problem for a week I think it's time for another solution.

Thanks for help. Yes, I had to do a fresh install finally :(
