I have now installed 16.04 64 bit, having previously used 14.04 i386.
I'm a bit old school, so I prefer the old "Win XP" look, so installed Mate.
My old setup used Gnome Fallback and Compiz to accomplish this.
I was able to move my cursor straight across from one workspace to another seamlessly, and the same with dragging windows across.
But my old settings were wiped in the clean install, so I'm trying to do the same thing with the new setup.
I've forgotten how to do it,
I've ticked "edge flip move" in the desktop wall, and set viewport switching with mouse button 1 left and right, but everything gets a bit confusing after that.

Anybody been able to do it?

You can right-click on a window in the bottom panel and select "Move To Another Workspace."

Not the answer you're looking for, but it does work, and is how I move windows around on MATE.
