View Full Version : 16.04 Nvidia Drivers issue

I didn't use the Nvidia drivers in 15.10 after my last issue (uninstalling them suddenly made Ubuntu lose all its configuration and boot settings), but I decided to try again in 16.04. I installed the 361.42 driver from 'additional drivers', rebooted, and it booted fine. But every time I tried to login I got a black screen that said something about 'cleaning blocks' (flickered too quickly to read), and brought me straight back to the login screen. I went to terminal, purged the drivers, switched back, and got the 'no input, graphics and whatever configurations' found, but restarting fixed it and put me back on the open source driver this time.

My question is, why can't I login using the nvidia drivers? I want to use them because using Intel's driver causes my laptop to get really hot really easily with just basic flash elements open (over 90 degrees with a regular vanilla minecraft game open). I heard using a proprietary driver can help with overheating (not sure if true).

Any ideas?

I have Nvidia GeForce 940M which did work on 14.04 as long as I tread around it carefully, and sort of worked on 15.10 unless I wanted to log recovery mode.

I found these errors posted in syslogs for that restart several times:
Apr 23 14:40:32 arcane-X555LB lightdm[879]: /etc/modprobe.d is not a file

I think those are the logs for logging into a profile but I could be wrong...

Also found this line, found it hilarious:

Any ideas? I saw a few other threads but not with my issue. No black screen, just an endless login loop. Works fine with open source driver so I'm going to probably stick with that and deal with using a laptop cooler.

I'm having the exact same issue :(

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2321407

And yeah, it's a pain, steam won't start :( I'll keep you posted if I find anything. So, not GPU related (mine is a 970). Unless it affect the 9xx serie.

There's several people posting trouble now. Maybe it's a bug that can be fixed. Let's hope. :) If I find anything that works I'll let you know, but since I can't risk killing my system so close to college finals I won't be trying anything fancy.

Are you having any issues with tearing after you updated? How do I go about updating my Nvidia driver? Do I have to uninstall the current Nvidia driver in order to do so or is there an update command that I can type in the Terminal?

This solved my issue. I only had a Wallpaper and cursor. After I set the kernel parameter nouveau.modeset=0 I was able to get into TTY to install the driver. 364.19 has been running perfectly all day!

WOW sorry about the triple post! The forum kicked me off the first post.

Please excuse me if I am mistaken, however I believe the Kernel/Graphics issues started with the Release of 14.04.2, which included a Kernel Update. The original 14.04 Default Kernel 3.13 worked well with many Graphics, such as NVidia and especially Intel. It wasn't until the upgraded Kernel that was a part of the 14.04.2 Upgrade that the Graphics issues started. Since then the Graphics issues have worsened, especially with certain Intel, such as the i1915 Series and other Intel Chipsets. As I have been posting, with 16.04, I have gone from continual Desktop freezes with very poor Font Rendering with the Lubuntu 16.04 Beta to a completely black screen with blinking cursor, no boot data and no fix as yet with the 16.04 final release. Unusable.

Yup, and in my case, it's a kernel updated that fixed it, not a driver update. SO i'm thinking there was some bugs with the kernel and the drivers.

anon, would need to test more, but what litle I played worked.

Just did some more update, and guess what ? No more graphics again !!!

Seriously ???

Seam to be realated to kernel update. So what now ? Having drivers breaking at evry kernel update is not gonna do.. How do we fix this once and for all ??
