unity-settings-daemon crashes

Just installed 16.04 cleanly and I've come across a strange error. It boots to the log in screen but then seems to freeze and I can't place the curser in teh password box. If I type my password and hit enter it eventually logs in though, but this is followed by a crash message:

unity-settings-daemon crash with SIGSEGV in up_exported_daemon-get_lid_is_closed()

Any ideas?
