Lost files during upgrade

I know (I should have known better. but) I lost multiple files that I didn'nt back up during upgrading from ver 14 to 16. I upgraded using the option than stated "my files will be kept". I had numerous files / folders on the old desktop that are now Gone. Is there any hope in recovering them? If so how?
