Hello provide us with the specs for your machine in order to get the best answer.

Second how did you install the ISO file on that DVD are you using Windows?

The machine is an old P4 running at 2.53GHz equiped with 1GB of RAM and a 7600GS, I installed the ISO that I downloaded from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop
And yes my main PC uses windows.

I suggest that you pick Lubuntu and install from a USB drive.

This.

This might help (http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/). You could also try Xubuntu-core (https://unit193.net/xubuntu/core/) which is very light too. The latest Ubuntu 16.04 LTS will not run well, or at all, on that machine.

Did you by any chance create your install disk by dragging and dropping the ISO image to the disk? Did you create a data disk with the ISO? Neither will work. You need to 'burn disk image' or use a software app to create a bootable USB.

With the specs you have you will definitely need a lighter version of Ubuntu..
