Can anyone tell me.
I've had a search and it seems to be something to do with Gnome interface design?

HIG = Human Interface Guidelines

The Gnome ones are available here (http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/hig/2.0/).

Basically, it means integrating your app into Gnome and providing certain basic features such as support for multiple languages.

Ah, I understand.

With my inlaws not being human, it seems like I wont be putting a PC in for them anytime soon !

you can always give them an inhuman interface. Most newbies would consider the command line 'inhuman.' IF you must have X, give them something truly vile, like, say....CDE.
