Hello,

I recently installed ubuntu 16.04 unity and would now like to try the gnome desktop environment. What is the best way to install gnome on 16.04. I tried following an article written about 15.10 and when i logged in using gnome everything was really zoomed in and barely functional. I would also like to update to 3.20 once I have gnome installed if possible. Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The best way is to install Ubuntu Gnome and then wait for the Ubuntu Gnome developers to bring in Gnome 3 shell improvements as they are able. The Ubuntu Gnome developers provide a PPA (Personal Package Archive) so users can install some Gnome stuff in advance of it being ported into Ubuntu Gnome proper. The Ubuntu Gnome developers would have been working hard to bring Gnome 3.18 into Ubuntu Gnome.

Gnome 3.20 was release towards the end of March this year. That is too close to the release date of Ubuntu 16.04 for any of it to get into Ubuntu 16.04 or Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 for that matter.

I tried to install the iso from the link below, but when I booted up I was presented with unity instead of gnome. I am now downloading the gnome-ubuntu-beta2 which will hopefully work.

Yep, now you've got it.

Make sure you have the 64bit version if that's what you're after, naturally. ;)

Did you change the session selection before you logged in and booted up?

I had GNOME Shell added to Ubuntu 14.04. Don't remember exactly how I installed it, but I was planning to add GNOME Shell to 16.04, too. At the moment I'm running 15.10, so just now I added GNOME Shell to that by simply installing the gnome-shell package and everything that came in with that. Seems to have worked fine. Should work for 16.04, too, right? For those who prefer having both Unity and GNOME Shell to choose from...

One thing missing in these answers is how to toggle between Unity and Gnome in 16.04. One used to be able to do this with older versions (my recollection), but the only advice I now find on the web goes back to 14.04, or earlier. I'm not sure these answers are relevant to 16.04. Anybody got a clue on this?

Thanks.

Have you already installed Gnome shell?

You switch between Gnome shell and Unity by selecting your choice when logging in.

The system is the same as previous iterations.

There is a little gear wheel (cog wheel) on the log in screen (where you enter your password).

Click on the gear wheel and you can select your environment.
