Volume over ssh

I have a question: is there a way you can turn up the volume on a computer over ssh??

There may be several options depending on what's the remote machine is running.

Is it another vanilla Ubuntu machine (with pulse audio)?

Is it a bare bones installation may be (running alsa)?

Do you want an application to run louder, say VLC, or the whole system?
