I recently did an upgrade using the .iso file from usb boot. I forgot about upgrading using terminal. Also I used a different userID. Is there a way to enable the old userID and would the applications that I installed after the 12.04 install still be there and ready to use?

You need to create an new user account for that original user with the original username & password. You do that in System Settings>User Accounts. Then you should be able to login as the original user and access the original user's home folder.

I am beginning to wonder if this upgrade from a ISO image on a USB stick with a new username & password was actually a fresh install. In which case, all bets are off.

Regards.

I was wondering about the difference between the two, upgrade from terminal vs upgrade from iso.

I am able to login using the new user ID. But when I activated a PW for the old ID then attempted to login to that ID, the screen went black and returned to the login screen.

would it be possible to revert from the 14.04 back to the 12.04?The only way is to reinstall 12.04 there is not a revert option in ubuntu, but you can back up your important files so they are easy to reinstall.
