View Full Version : Desktop only after update in 14.04

I allowed a fairly significant update to occur a few days ago on my Acer Aspire 1410 running 14.04. After a routine shutdown, the next time the machine was started, it gave me a Desktop, the three desktop icons that were there before the update, and nothing else. No launcher, no menu bar, no notification area--nothing else.

Ctrl+Alt+T does not bring up a terminal, but an app showing three tabs (Processes, Resources, File Systems). Right-clicking the desktop will get me to Settings, but they are apparently being ignored.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

EDIT: It turns out one of the icons on the Desktop opens a directory window, so I ought to be able to back up some files I'd rather not lose. But before I go there, might someone be able to tell me where a terminal executable lives in the directory tree? AFAIK, mine is a vanilla installation of 14.04.
