If I have a machine running Ubuntu 16.04 BETA 2, and I continue to update it through next month's 16.04 final release, should I expect it to be properly updated and equivalent to the final release when that time comes without needing to perform a clean install later?

Thanks!

Yes just keep updating and you will be on the LTS release

If the answer seems short & to the point it is because you are not the first person to ask this.

Each release of Ubuntu has its own software repositories. The repositories for Xenial Xerus (16.04) were set up within a day or two 15.10 being released. At first the software (packages) in those repositories was exactly the same code as those in the 15.10 (wily) repositories. This is because each new release of Ubuntu is built on the previous release. But over the days, weeks & months the packages have been upgraded and the process will continue up until 16.04 is released. In fact it will continue after the release of 16.04 as security fixes are applied.

Regards.
