Graphical problems after upgrade

I have installed some automatic updates last week and shutdown the computer to install them over the weekend. Just came back to it and now I am experiencing some graphical problems, essetial all the boxes display a black box around it and the terminal just shows as a solid black with no ability to input any commands which make its diagnose it a bit tricky. Any suggestions? I have attached a screenshot of it in case it helps.

What graphic card do you have and what driver does it use?
What CPU & how much RAM in your machine?
Which version of Ubuntu?

The problem is I couldn't even access the terminal so can't really provide any detail. In any case I have reinstalled ubuntu and that seems to have solved it
