Hi - I just installed Virtualbox on my Windows 10 PC, then Ubuntu Server 14.04. I installed Gnome core, using:

sudo apt-get install xorg gnome-core gnome-system-tools gnome-app-install

but when i run "startx" or boot the server up from Virtualbox I'm getting a black screen with just a cursor... /var/log/Xorg.1.log posted below.

I think it must be something to do with my graphics driver but i can't tell. Anyone have any idea what I'm missing?

I have not tried gnome-core, but what you have looks good to me.

Have you tried xinitrc?

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/xinitrc#Making_a_DE.2FWM_choice

And this could be video related, onboard server graphics are poor.
