Which Ubuntu derivative should you install on the laptop?

If you have a USB stick or two, try them each live from the USB and install the one that fits your hardware and needs. :)

Two things which are significant are your hardware and your preference. You can try them all and if your computer is not recent, check the minimum hardware requirements for each and compare that to your hardware.
