I upgraded from 14.04 to 14.10 (I know that 14.10 is unsupported but I am just passing through to get on 15.10). In the settings there is that I have kubuntu 14.10 but when I log out there is written Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Can somebody tell me if it is really running on 14.10 or how to update that login screen to show the right version? When I log to tty1 in login screen, it shows 14.10.

Thread moved to Installations & Upgrades.

Welcome. If you're on 14.04 bit puzzled why you're going here. 16.04 LTS will be released late April and 14.04 LTS upgrades directly to it via the net. 14.04 to 15.10 is problematic.

You are taking the hard road by attempting to upgrade through an unsupported release to get to one that has five months support left. That is also problematic. :|

Backing up your personal data and clean installing might be easier if there is a specific reason you are wanting to get to 15.10. To find out what you're really on, open a terminal and:

lsb_release -a
uname -a

Thank you for you answer. One more question: There doesn't work Gnome or Unity on 14.04. If I try to log in to one those environments, only wallpaper appears and after that I am taken back to login screen. But on Kubuntu I can log in without a problem.
