In the past, my family and I used Google+ with location sharing enabled (for specific users of course).

This way we could keep track regularly of where the others were currently. Recently Google has removed this functionality.

So now I am on the lookout for any tool/app/service that could be a viable replacement.

Requirements:

- easy on the battery
- user should not need to approve each location request manually
- reliable

Anything out there?

Pathshare - realtime location sharing which is available for both, iOS and Android, as well as for web browsers (in the last case watching only).

As far as reliable I really can not say.(Sorry)
But those are all I really can speak of.

I suppose everyone uses Foursquare/Swarm nowadays, and since Swarm is tracking you constantly by defoult, you are always visible to your friends, unless you turn this feature off. Which is of course preferable thing to do.
However some use professional tracking apps instead, which cannot be easily detected. The only way to avoid it is to keep an eye on your own phone, because to operate properly, they need to be installed on your device.
