Apologies if this is a FAQ, but most of my search results relate to problems with dual-boot installs. I don't want a dual-boot install. I want to obliterate every trace of Windows 10 with a fresh install of 14.04 desktop, and boot only from that from now on!

When I boot from the 14.04 desktop CDROM, everything looks normal at first: screen turns purple, ubuntu logo in the center with blinking dots below - and then as soon as the Welcome screen appears with the buttons to choose "Try Ubuntu" or "Install Ubuntu" the video display goes haywire, jittering horizontally. Power cycle needed to recover.

Windows 10 Home ("upgraded" from Windows 7)
HP Pavillion Model #p7-1258
AMD A8-3820 APU w/ Radeon HD Graphics
8G DDR3 1333Mhz dual-channel memory
