Well, I had a notification on my work other OS desktop and looked around :

I've also been using dropbox and Mega (https://mega.nz/) which also have Linux clients, useful when using VMs.

I wonder how many people won't remove their 'stuff' from there before this happens?
I wonder how many people will wish they had, after it happens?

Love my USB!

I've compressed the copy folder for backup and am on my way to remove files from the sync folder. Thing is I used copy.com for my Ubuntu stuff..

I do not use cloud storage but I have heard of MEGA (https://mega.nz/): 50 Gb free -- But when i checked about 8 months ago i found that they were owned by Dotcom.
After that I just gave up looking for any more.
So I Bought 2 MyBook Pro's each with 2TB storage..

Yeah, I do have local storage and backups too. Cloud storage is helpful when traveling a lot or when using VMs, even if there are other options. No option is really bullet proofed, all have their downsides. It also is a matter of what you put in the cloud. Mega uses encryption both on the storage space itself and during the transactions. Compromises :)

I like your kind of thinking. :)

I have never used Copy. But I do use Google Drive.

And this thread is starting to remind me about what happened to Ubuntu One.

I came here when I heard the news. So sad :(

Anyway, I've been using copy.com since a few months after it went public. Then migrated all my dropbox to it. Now it's shutting down. Any recommendation for a good alternative? I don't like MEGA. I'm looking for a good replacement with linux support like Dropbox. (I migrated away from Dropbox since the free version has too little space).

:DThere are somethings I just get thick-headed(closed minded) over.
I was really looking forward to CharlesA comming in and telling his method of personal cloud. i remember a thread of his
about his set-up and i thought it was pretty clever..but i can not find the thread any more:o
Thanks for posting this bapoumba;, Very Thoughtful.
Kind Regards

How did you miss that? Kim was headline news, in the tech world at least, for quite a while.

Nothing like my local backups and flash drive with LUKS encryption - it's always good when you don't have a great connection somewhere. Saved some trouble quite a few times.
Still not a fan of cloud storage, but if they say that's going to be the future of it, fine. I wouldn't like to boot my system linked to a datacenter RAID configuration - I don't really know if they are trustworthy enough, regardless of their encryption software (open-source or not).

Well now, this just SUCKS! It also illustrates how when you use a service (even if you pay for it) there is no guarantee that they won't just up-and-close it (this is added to the Google Reader app I used daily that was shut down).

I had 230 GB from all of the referrals I got (thankfully I am not using all of that).

At least since it was synchronizing, it means I have a local copy

If you DO have a lot of files and you want to move it elsewhere then look at mover.io (https://mover.io/), which is a service Copy included for synchronizing between cloud sites without having to download first. It is a great service and I was setting it up to backup my Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive into Copy.com since it had the most space. I found out about it when I was offloading from UbuntuOne.

Oh well. Dropbox is great, but you dont' get much space unless you are going to pay and they are the more expensive ones. Otherwise I would probably jump to them in a heartbeat since they are cross-platform and work.

Google Drive and OneDrive would be great, but support is dependent on the service owners "playing nice" and not changing the API too drastically (like Google Drive which, iirc, said they were working on a Google Drive for Linux .... like 5 or more years ago?!?!)

I guess it is fortunate I have been looking at setting up an ownCloud server at home and maybe if I get it working and secure well enough can throw it up on AWS, Rackspace or even Azure for internet accessibility and offsite storage. Or just use one of their providers (https://owncloud.org/providers/).

If I "host" it, however (locally or hosting site), then I can be sure it will stick around and not be dropped for no reason. That and the data is still mine.

I've been looking at ownCloud, too, since getting the news about Copy. If I have to pay for space, I like Google Drive's rate for 100G at $2/mo, but I like the idea of running my own secure cloud server even better. I'm not close to my limit on Google Drive, though, so here's hoping something more robust than grive comes along to sync files for Ubuntu...

I have about 125GB with OneDrive (+100 GB Bing reward) and one of the benefits I like is that with OneDrive the files are synchronized and accessible online without converting to one format or another. The OfficeOnline can even default to ODT format instead of MS Office format. A synchronization client is about the only thing missing.

I did try 'onedrived' but somehow my files were getting messed up (between linux running onedrived and a Windows 10 preview attached to the account, somebody made a mess of things and I am more inclined to think it was the one from Microsoft...)

But again, it puts things out of my control and into the hands of somebody else and if you aren't paying for a product you ARE the product.

Yepper, We need a good tutorial for setting up a personal cloud-based solution..:D

A while back, ownCloud had some issues when installed on Ubuntu Server. Has anybody heard if this is fixed or if there is a work-around? I know the openSUSE group is involved in the development of ownCloud and works well with it, and I believe CentOS/RedHat is supposed to work well.

Mega (http://mega.co.nz) (by Kim DotCom?) offers end-to-end encryption and a PPA to install the client from.
50G free if I'm not mistaken.

Wasn't he in court for some reason, and all of the accounts inaccessible for a period of time until the courts released them, a while back?

Wasn't he in court for some reason, and all of the accounts inaccessible for a period of time until the courts released them, a while back?

It was my understanding that he was called down for providing a site for people to share copyrighted files illegally (megaupload). He made "MEGA" right after all of that, but MEGA has been taken from him, as well, according to him, and is now under the control of the New Zealand government. Since Dotcom is VEHEMENTLY opposed to government, he's distanced himself from it and even warns users not to trust it: wired.co.uk article (http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2015-07/31/kim-dotcom-mega-3).

I have space on MEGA, myself, because no one else offers that kind of encryption (and Dotcom is a little "over-the-top" with his politics, even if he makes some excellent points).

I have space on MEGA as it's a great place to store crap that I might use again down the road but do not want it to take up space on my units.

I'm not a movie star, music star or have nude pictures. Think I'm safe.

Well the combination of my other online account's files comes to about 48 GB so I could fit it all in the MEGA (and there is duplication between the services) but that is only if it seems like I won't get time to put together an ownCloud server soon or have a burning need to access things online.

Thanks for the info!

Another cloud service I'm trying right now is pCloud. I know it doesn't have the level of encryption that Mega advertises, but the remote drive access is pretty cool, the interface is nice, and the applications for windows, ubuntu and android all work great. It's only 10G up front, but that's more than most are willing to give up.

Similar to Copy, you get a little extra space for "spreading the word," so if you're interested in checking it out and want to get an extra 1G in the process (along with giving me an extra 1G), you can use this link (https://my.pcloud.com/#page=register&invite=crsbZSOlwKk). It's just an extra 1G, though, so please don't think twice about ignoring the link and just taking a look if you want.

One thing I did not mention is I also have 50Go (I think) with Orange, my internet provider, but their sync app is not very good. I have to place the files in a special window for them to be uploaded, meh.

Thing is I do not use the cloud storage for critical things. Critical files are locally backuped on two different hardware, some of them duplicated in my univ storage space. Not one backup procedure is entirely safe. With Orange and my univ, I'll at least be able to walk and talk with (scream at ?) someone if any of these solutions fail :)
The key is multiple local backup solutions for critical data and cloud for ease of use, exchange between OSes and travels.
