cant upgrade to ubuntu 12.04

im having problems upgrading ubuntu 10.04 to 12.04 when i go to the update manager it just freezes with a dialog.any help would be appreciated.

Hi and welcome.

In a nutshell, do your backup and install from scratch. It's too late to do such upgrade online. Ubuntu 10.04 is EoL.

Ubuntu 10.04 was the last desktop LTS version with 3 years support. So, 10.04 has been end of life for more than 2 years. From 12.04 onwards LTS releases of desktop Ubuntu were given 5 years support. Ubuntu 12.04 will reach end of life April 2016.

So, think seriously about fresh installing 14.04 at least. Or, 15.10 and then upgrading to 16.04 this April.

All the Ubuntu 10.04 releases have passed their "end of life" and are not supported any longer.

As others have said, 10.04 is long past its use-by date. It will probably be easier to backup your data and make a fresh installation of a newer version.
